BURNA BOY RIGGED HIS WAY TO GRAMMY NOMINATION?

  • Kidjo merited the Award anyway

Getting nominated for the Grammy: the Music’s biggest night” Awards in the world is not that easy. Just being nominated (without even winning at the end) makes one: the nominee, to enjoy international recognition that comes with that nomination.

Burna Boy, in his very first attempt to win a Grammy award, got beaten on Monday by a world legend, Angelique Kidjo in the best world music album category.

For him to be nominated alongside Kidjo, a lady who came to limelight in the 90s shows that Burna Boy didn’t rigged his way to the Grammy nomination. He is one of the young guys who have dedicated their time and resources in developing themselves and making Africa and Nigeria proud.

Burna Boy is just 28 and he is making so much impact in the world. Even Kidjo, after receiving the award dedicated it to Burna Boy saying the Nigerian artiste is one of the few African artistes changing the way African music was viewed in the Western world.

People say the Award would have ruined Burna Boy, but the truth is, with Burna Boy’s diligence and dedication, the award would have been a pride to Nigeria. There is another time anyway!

Burna Boy’s ‘Anybody’ made former U.S. president, Barrack Obama’s favourite music of 2019 list. Mr Obama disclosed this recently on Twitter and tagged the annual list as a “favourite tradition.”

This is to further prove that Burna Boy didn’t rig his way to Grammy nomination. He will make it someday.

Meanwhile, talking about Kidjo, a Beninese music legend, I was wandering why they brought Burna Boy, 28 years, who just came to limelight in 2010 in the same category with her. I mean, the lady, an actress and activist has been in the know since 1982. In fact, 2020 Grammy marked her fourth win in the category and also fourth Grammy win overall.

Kidjo has these diverse musical influences and creative videos that make her unique. Her strength in music is so remarkable.

When she gave an audience-rousing performance of her “Afrika” during the 62nd Grammy at LA, the power and competence was so obvious. The vocal; the sound and voice coordination and participation/interaction with her audience was so amazing.
She actually merited the award.
