Come Holy Spirit and fill the heart of the faithful, rekindle in them the fire of your love! We thank God today for the gift of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit among us. Traditionally, Pentecost is a celebration of 50 days after Christ’s resurrection, and 10 days after his ascension. Here, the church commemorates the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the apostles and disciples in order to fulfil his promise. Remember, after his ascension, his disciples locked themselves in the upper room for the fear of the Jews who never loved Jesus. But then Jesus did promise them the holy Spirit that will teach them all truths (revealing the mysteries of God kingdom), the counsellor and advocate. This is the day that Jesus fulfils his promise, the disciples are experiencing new era in their lives, they are strengthened , no fear again, they are emboldened with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. In our time too, you are the disciple of Jesus by the virtue of your baptism. You first received the holy Spirit at your baptism and the full outpouring of the Holy Spirit came at your confirmation. And so, the Holy Spirit empowers and enables you to exercise a variety of gifts and services. Note that the presence of the Holy Spirit is to give life, to create and recreate, to console and strengthen, to unite, purifies, builds, and it opens the heart to love. Not to invoke the holy Spirit to kill or destroy because the holy Spirit is the third person in the Blessed Trinity, He is God, it came from the love of the Father and the Son. In other words, he proceeds from the Father and the Son. Today I earnestly pray that may the outpouring of the Holy Spirit dispels the darkness of men’s heart against you and your family, and may the holy Spirit be present in your life and all you do and be fruitful, to open the doors that were locked and make you bear good fruits that endure. Happy Pentecost Sunday to you and remain blessed. Fr Joe Eboh.
