…plans to take House of Assembly primaries to Awa Police station against Electoral Act
By Titus Inyang
The governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel has concluded plan to impose his preferred aspirant and cousin, Mr. Sunday Johnny on the people of Onna local government area in the forth coming PDP State House of Assembly primaries scheduled to hold on May 18, 2022.
The plan was perfected yesterday at Decozy Lounge, opposite K Orbit Hotel, C Line, Ewet Housing Estate in Uyo. In attendance were the Onna Chapter Chairman of PDP, Barr. Ubong Adiakpan, Onna Council Chairman, Elder Iniabasi Ekanem, the governor’s cousin, Mr. Sunday Johnny, DG Sunday Johnny’s Campaign Organization, Mr. Godwin Sunday Ben aka Black, Leader Onna Legislative Council, chapter and ward officers of PDP in Onna LGA.
A reliable source says, that the governor has insisted to use Direct Primaries (Option A4) where delegates will queue behind him, rather than Indirect Primaries (Secret Ballot system) as approved by the Electoral Law.
Again, he has vowed to take the party primaries from the approved designated center which is Onna Council Secretariat to Awa Police Station so as to intimidate other Aspirants and Delegates in favour of his cousin.
Meanwhile, eleven (11) aspirants have been cleared by PDP Screening Committee to contest Onna State Constituency. They are Malcolm Etuk, Imo Eka, Sunday Johnny, Iniobong Uffang and Emem Chris Ekpo.
Others who who were also cleared are Aniekan Williams, Josiah Ufot, Ekpotu Uquang, Sunny Ituen and Akwaowo Ikott.
Speaking with this reporter, a chieftain of the party in Onna who pleaded anonymity said the governor intend to use the same method he used to imposed Iniabasi Ekanem on the people, saying such outdated tactics will not work at modern politics.
“Governor Udom is fun of fronting unpopular candidate in every elections. Just few days ago, those that he ordered the PDP Screening Committee not to clear them to stand nomination on frivolous reasons, were all cleared by the National leadership of the party. This development has caused the governor lost the respect people have for him as a father.
“The governor suppose to be a father to all Aspirants in the state, but rather, he has chosen to tow the path that is dishonourable, not befitting of him as an elder of Quality Iboe Church.
He continued, “With the way the governor is handling political issues ahead of 2023 general elections, by insisting on fronting unpopular aspirants, he may end up surrendering the state to APC which it is alleged he will join the party immediately the election is over.
Moreover, another stakeholder of the party, said governor Emmanuel is being selfish after staying in office as a governor for eight years, he still want to impose his cousin, Mr. Sunday Johnny as State House Member, not considering the fact that the sitting House of Assembly Member, Mr. Nse Essien and House of Rep Member, Hon. Patrick Ifon are all from his Awa Clan.
He noted that while Governor Emmanuel doesn’t want anyone from the other two clans to rise politically so that development will start and end in his Awa alone.
He expressed regret that the governor’s hatred for Oniong and Nung Ndem clans are very open hence, he abandoned the Ndon Eyo-Odio Road of just 15 km that passes the local government Secretariat at Abat.
A youth leader, Otobong Ntiense, said they will not close their eyes and watch the governor building fortunes for himself and family members alone, while Onna youths are begging to survive, vowing that they will resist any attempt to impose another unpopular candidate on them after the Council Chairman, which he described as being very stingy.
It will be recalled that in 2020 local government election in the state, governor Emmanuel used the same method of using his position to influence the outcome of party primaries which produced an unpopular candidate, Elder Iniabasi Ekanem who has performed woefully since assumption of office as Chairman. He is planning to adopt the same approach in State House of Assembly primaries which is totally unacceptable and will go contrary to Electoral Law.
