The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria ( ALGON) , Mr Iniobong
Robson Nnamso has condemned in very strong terms the callousness and dastardly tendencies exhibited by some youths who hid under the cloak of the #EndSARS protest to embark on wanton destruction of public and privately-owned properties across the State, especially the State capital.
ALGON wonders what was the nexus between the genuine agitation for a more responsible and humane policing and justifiable quest for improvement in the welfare of Nigerians which some very responsible youths carried out under the #EndSARS aegis and the senseless carnage, looting and vandalism that took place in Uyo on Thursday, 22nd October, 2020.
Given the nationally-acclaimed famous peaceful disposition of Akwa Ibom in the comity of States, ALGON strongly doubts if those dastardly acts were committed by Akwa Ibom people and asks security agencies to get to the root of the ugly incident.
While ALGON frowns at this
height of lawlessness, the body of Council Chairmen sympathizes with some prominent establishments whose facilities were torched in the course of the mayhem to include the Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation (AKBC), the Anchor Insurance House that accommodates the Akwa Ibom Primary Healthcare Development Agency, De Choice Mall, Access Bank, FCMB and other private business premises that were victims of the avoidable madness.
While commending the State Governor for declaring a dawn to dusk curfew in a bid to restore peace and order in the State, ALGON says it has directed all its members, especially Chairmen of border Local Government Councils to be more vigilant and forestall the infiltration of miscreants whose nefarious intentions might be to puncture our famed peaceful status and destroy what has taken us years to build.
ALGON commiserates families whose innocent loved ones might have either died or gotten maimed during the carnage. It appeals to all youths of the state to resist the temptation of being lured into acts capable of taking the State backwards and tainting its image.
The body of Council Chairmen prays God to heal our country and restore responsible leadership that will give the Nigerian citizens right to equitable share of the huge material resources that the country has been blessed with.
