BREAKING: Police Arrests Newspaper Distributor In Place Of TheMail Newspaper Publisher

…Action callous, wicked – Federated Chapel Chairman

…As NUJ restates vow to protect its members

A Newspaper distributor in Uyo, Chidi Ngadiubia has been arrested by men of the Nigeria police Force and detained at Ikot Akpanabia on the orders of the Akwa Ibom State Government.

He was picked up today at his distribution point at Asutan Street in place of the Publisher of The Mail Newspaper, Mr. Ifreke Nseowo who was the main target.

A female caller had tricked Nseowo by telling him she has an advert for him, it was learnt. But she was referred to the Newspaper Distributor, Chidi at Asutan street. The young editor asked that the advert be dropped with him as he will pick it up from there.

But on arrival at Chidi’s distribution point, they arrested and dragged him to the Police headquarters and asked him to produce Ifreke Nseowo-Connoisseur else he will be made to face their wrath.

Recall that THE INK had earlier reported the plot to arrest The Mail man whom we gathered is on the watchlist of Akwa Ibom State Government owing to what they feel is the Paper’s content which they perceive has been too strong for the comfort of Government.

Meanwhile, Federated Chapel of which Ifreke Nseowo is a member has condemned in strong terms the manner in which journalists are being hounded in the state.

The Chairman of the chapel, Mr. Nsibiet John has described the development as “wicked, callous, ungodly, satanic and a fresh attempt to violently violate all known rules of democracy and free press.”

The arrest of Chidi in place of The Mail Publisher has also raised fresh concerns as the NUJ in Akwa Ibom State has reiterated its stance of not allowing any of her members to be victimised and hounded by any individual, group or institution.

It was also gathered that a lady and and three gentlemen suspected to be police officers were at Udi Street and its environs earlier today with a plot to find and arrest The Mail Publisher.

The officers who wore plain clothes made enquiries about Nseowo whom they thought had an office around the area, but he was nowhere to be found.

For fear of an untoward development, Mr. Nseowo, THE INK learnt, has gone underground in order to ward off those after him.

It could be recalled that THE INK had reported recently that agents of the Akwa Ibom State Government are plotting to arrest Ifreke Nseowo.

The plot, THE INK understands, is premised on the medium’s regular reportage of stories related to the alleged certificate forgery case involving Gov. Emmanuel’s anointed successor, Pastor Umo Eno and Akan Okon.

We had reported that men loyal to Pastor Umo Eno have not found THE MAIL’S reports favourable to their principal hence their plot to arrest Ifreke Nseowo, ostensibly to weaken him and his medium.
