EFC 2023 In The Safe Hands Of Okpolupm U Etteh

“The boss drives people; the leader coaches them. The boss depends on authority; the leader on good will. The boss inspires fear; the leader inspires enthusiasm. The boss says ‘I’; the leader says ‘we.’ The boss fixes the blame for the breakdown; the leader fixes the breakdown. The boss knows how it is done; the leader shows how. The boss says ‘go’; the leader says ‘let’s go!'”.

The above maxim by H. Gordon Selfridge 1864-1947, an American-British retail magnate glaringly portrays the man of our discourse not as boss, but as a selfless leader.

This piece is neccesited by the fact that a credible data, obtained from the records of the National Assembly with regard to the number of bills sponsored by the members of the House of Representatives from Akwa Ibom State, was online a few days ago.

In the said data, MPs representing Etinan, Ikot Abasi, and Ukanafun topped the scores. A thorough glance at the column on the member representing Eket Federal Constituency, made me to openly shed tears and the tears rolled down to my jaw. That is to show you how serious it was.

I deliberately shed tears because the column scores of the MP showed zero bills. I mean, the member representing Eket federal constituency has sponsored no bill in the over two years of his representation in the National Assembly. While still on it, I asked myself what Eket Federal Consistency has done wrong to deserve this kind of representation in the past 7-8 years and without much wait, I concluded that the constituency has suffered a big blow in the hands of wrong representatives and that, it is a consequence of wrong leadership recruitment process.

Here comes 2023, a time when representatives will be elected into different leadership positions and Eket federal constituency won’t be left out. As a matter of fact, there are many aspirants already vying for the National Assembly position in the constituency, and interestingly, Rt. Hon. Okpolupm Etteh is one of the aspirants.

In as much as Eket federal constituency would not want to be left out in the queue of effective representation from 2023, it is necessary and worthy of note to consider, examine and screen very well who is going to have the mandate of the constituency in the Green Chamber.

Among the overzealous aspirants vying for the position, Etteh ticks all the boxes. Like someone will say, lawmaking in a place as the National Assembly is not for the feint hearted. It is not for a novice. Not for a naive-minded person. Not for a push-and-start kind of person. Not for the shy type. Not for someone who can not ‘see the road well’. Rather, it is for someone who has the experience and can-do-spirit. Someone who knows the nitty-gritty of lawmaking and due process; someone who is people-centric. Someone who is a go-getter. Someone who takes the burdens of his people on his shoulders anywhere he goes and knows how and what to press buttons to solve it. Okpolupm Etteh is that man.

As Eugene Mccarthy noted “Being in politics is like being a football coach. You have to be smart enough to understand the game”. Etteh is smart, intelligent, courageous, selfless and perfectly understands the game and metaphysics of politics. Simply put, Eket Federal Constituency from 2023 is safe in the hands of Etteh.

Etteh as a three-term state house of assembly member, a former commissioner, a former honorary adviser to the governor, is someone who will not only make laws for his people but will also carry out effective oversight functions especially the ones that directly relate to the people in the grassroots. He knows the daily yearnings of his people and what and how to do to mitigate it.

He did it in his 11years in the state assembly and the constituents were impressed and there is no gainsaying the fact that, if given the opportunity as the only qualified and marketable aspirant, Etteh will make the federal constituency proud and the people might feel that, they never had any representative in that past eight years in the national assembly.

Okpolupm is a brand Eket federal constituency needs to protect. He is a brand that needs to be sent to go and represent Eket federal constituency in the Green Chambers. The Green Chamber needs someone like Etteh. Not someone who will go there and begin to amass wealth for himself, his family and fumble up and down.

Etteh is made already. He has done it before. He knows how to do it. He is the only man that can do the job very well and no aspirant among the aspirants is qualified to wear the cap. Rt. Okpolupm Etteh is the man the cap fits. It is just the duty of every citizen according to his best capacities to give validity to his convictions in political affairs as Albert Einstein maintained, but according to Deepak Chopra, “When you make a choice, you change the future.” Etteh is that future. With him, there is hope at last!
