Senator Etang Edet Umoyo was born on 21st April, 1949 in Idung Assan into the family of Elder Edet Umoyo of Idung Orok and Madam Nkoyo Edet Umoyo (Nkoyo Etang Isangedighi of Okopedi, all in Etebi, Esit Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.

He attended Quo Iboe Church Group School, Akpautong and obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1961 with distinction. (1956-1961).
Still not satisfied within the level of education, he took the entrance examination into the Salvation Army Secondary School, Akai, Ubium.
He excelled in the examination and started his Secondary education and obtained his West African School Certificate in 1968. (1963-1968)
He proceeded to the famous Methodist Boys High School, Oron, where he obtained a Higher School Certificate in 1970 (1969-1970).
Not relenting, he took the University Entrance Examination and gained admission into the University of Nigeria, NSUKKA (UNN) to study sociology. He bagged his B.Sc Hons in 1974. (1971-1974).

At the end of his H.S.C, he had a stint in the teaching field. He was employed as an associate teacher at Methodist Boys’ High School, Oron before processing to the University.
After his university education, he took part in the compulsory National Youth Service Corps programme (NYSC). He served at the Radio Jos, Benue State.
Coming back to Lagos to further his career, he got a job with the Nigerian Customs Service. As a man of principles and integrity, he could not cope with the going on in that service and so he resigned his appointment.
Senator Etang Umoyo, veered into private practice which took him to Dunlop, Nigeria Limited, Ikeja Lagos and he worked there as National Sales Manager.
He later moved to Johnson Wax, Isolo, Lagos. He worked there for some years as the National Marketing Manager. This position took him to Kenya, Egypt, Greece,
UK and USA on exchange programmes. Fully armed with management skills after obtaining a certificate in Fields Sales Management at the Nigerian Institute of Management in 1978 and being spotted as a promising young man who had shown his capacity and passion of Etebi Family Union for years, he was recommended by Late Commodore E.T. Okpo as Commissioner in the then Cross River State.
He was appointed as Commissioner for Agriculture in 1984 and was re-appointed as Commissioner for Local Government from 16th September, 1985 – 30th November, 1986. Under the reign of Navy Captain Edet Akpan Archibong at a young age of 34 years. He was one of the Youngest Commissioners at the time. In those two capacities, he proved his mettle as an aslute administrator, manager and lover of peace, education and progress.
As a result of his oratory skills, competence, love for tradition, justice and equity, he was approached to represent the Eket Senatorial District at the National Assembly.
In 1992 he was elected as Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing Eket Senatorial District.
Before joining politics, he had a stint with Ekinet Nig. Ltd., Integrated Development Initiative (IDI), an NGO involved in Management & Resolution in the Niger Delta. He became the National Coordinator of the Group. He incorporated other companies in the name of DAN-DOVE SERVICE LTD.

After his services as Commissioner in the then Cross River State, he was approached by his people to be a voice for the oppressed. He succumbed and joined politics via UPN, later joined the Liberal Convention Party and became the National Treasurer of the party.
Senator Etang Umoyo joined the NRC Party. In later years, two major parties evolved among other parties. He pitched his tent with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He had a stint with the APC at some point being convinced otherwise, he made a u-turn and returned to the PDP.
He has been a voice for the oppressed, a voice against injustice. He has been involved among other things in promoting peace, conflict management and resolution in the Niger Delta Region. He has held general public and private sector positions of responsibility and has always exhibited depth, insight, independence
and competence. Among such positions is member, Board of University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Uyo. He was member society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP).
Until his demise, he was the chairman, PAN Niger Delta Forum, Akwa Ibom State Chapter.

Senator Etang Umoyo married the love of his life, Grace (Nee Ben Essien) in 1980, at the Methodist Church, Yaba, Lagos. The marriage is blessed with four children and three grandchildren.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is always the first person to call on each one’s birthday at 6:00am. He had never for once forgotten that, he had pet names for everyone.

An ardent lover of knowledge, progress, education and development, he never failed to leave a word of advice and quotes to buttress his points during discussions.
He was secretary to Etebi Family Union in Lagos for some years. During that period an end of year event tagged “ETEBI DAY” was flagged off. He was the inaugural chairman of the occasion. Many sons and daughters of Etebi have been given scholarships under that platform. He has sponsored, mentored, encouraged a host of youths and seen them attain their goals.
Senator Etang was a community-minded person and a family man. All siblings and relations looked up to him as their father and leader.
Lover of tradition, he loved wearing his traditional attires. Always clean shaven, smartly dressed and conscious of his looks.
A very humorous person, there was never a dull moment around him. He is a catalogue of history in all ramifications.
A repository of wisdom and knowledge. Tries to respond to invites and social events.

An ardent follower of the Methodist Church, never joked with his favourite devotional “Daily Reflection”, “Daily Manna” and his bible studies.
He loved singing his favourite song “Obong mi afo mofon, kuwem mi, afo mofon, kesit ufok mi afo mofon”.
Met with the Lord before his passage unto glory. Loved lending a helping hand to everyone in need, he could give his last penny to solve someone’s problem so long as the person is happy.
Senator Etang Edet Umoyo had a brief illness and yielded to the call of his Creator on 13th February, 2021.
