Yes, Onofiok Luke Is Still In The Race

Recently, well meaning Akwa Ibom sons and daughters residing within and outside the state have reached out to me to inquire about the status of Rt. Hon. Barr. Onofiok Luke’s 2023 Gubernatorial Aspiration.

Their concern is premised on unfounded assumptions of his withdrawal from the race for the top job in the Hilltop Mansion come 2023.

Recall that on Sunday, January 30, 2022 the learned gentleman and lawmaker in a statement titled “We Are Still On Course”, reaffirmed his commitment to demands of the good people of Akwa Ibom State for him to serve them as their Governor come 2023.

“My supporters and those sympathetic to my cause should please note that we are as resolute as ever in our desire to give our people purposeful leadership in the office of the Governor come 2023. God’s Amazing Grace has always seen us through and will always see us through”, he said, in a statement published on his facebook account and syndicated on news tabloids across the country. The statement suffices.

The assumption that the Nsit Ubium born lawmaker has pulled out of the race is not unconnected to assertions in certain quarters that he has been “silent” of late.

Has Onofiok Luke been silent? No he hasn’t. As member representing the good people of Etinan Federal Constituency in the National Assembly he had resumed his duties upon resumption from recess and has been making notable contributions to debates of national importance on the floor of the hallowed green chambers as well as participating in Committee activities where he serves as Chairman, House Committee on Federal Judiciary.

This he is doing because he understands the importance of the social contract he holds with the people of Etinan Federal Constituency which he represents in the National Assembly and in his 17 years experience in public service, has never betrayed the trust of his people and never will.

This explains why from his days as President of the Students Union of the University of Uyo, to his tenure as Speaker of the Nigerian Youth Parliament, to his assumption of office as member representing Nsit Ubium State Constituency in the House of Assembly where he served meritoriously as Chairman, House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, to his second term as member of the State Legislature where he became Speaker of the 6th Assembly, his political trajectory and growth has been based on antecedents of outstanding performances in previous positions he has held and I make bold to say that so far, he has neither disappointed nor betrayed public trust bestowed on him and will not do so in this journey to 2023.

His governorship aspiration notwithstanding, Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke shall not renege on his responsibilities to his constituents just as he will not disappoint his teeming supporters by chickening out of a gubernatorial aspiration that holds a lot in stock for all strata of people in Akwa Ibom State.

Therefore, this is a response to the myriads of questions on Rt. Hon. Barr. Onofiok Luke’s gubernatorial aspiration.

Yes he is still in the race and by the Amazing Grace of God alongside your unflinching support, he shall be elected as Governor of our dear state and shall be administered with the oath of office come May 29, 2023 to serve you and I, as the epitome of our collective yearnings for a man who combines excellent managerial skills with a compassionate heart for his people, a man who empathizes and understands the heartbeat and desires of the average citizen, the privileged, less privileged, and is committed to bringing their aspirations to fruition though a humane approach to governance, utilizing our commonwealth for the benefit of all, rather than the privileged few.

The intellectual prowess and competence of Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke to effectively discharge the duties demanded of him as Governor of Akwa Ibom State from May 29, 2023 is not in doubt.

Why does Onofiok want to be Governor? For himself or for others?

Onofiok Luke’s gubernatorial aspiration is not self serving. All through his life he has placed himself on the line for others. As Students Union President he led a struggle against increment of school fees that he personally could afford at the time but choose to ignore his convenience and advocated for students who could not afford the new fee regime.

This is who Onofiok is. His 17 years experience in public service is replete with instances where he has been there for others, times he has placed himself on the line so that others can have a meaningful existence and solutions to their problems, risking his political fortunes oftentimes.

He has never been a conformist neither has he been a sell out. He is a man of conviction and goodwill and it is upon these sterling attributes of his that my support for him is premised as I know for sure that when he becomes Governor you and I will, regardless of social stratification, thrive in an enabling environment where the rule of law prevails and feasible economic opportunities abound.

This is who you need come 2023: a man who looks beyond himself, his convenience or inconveniences but places himself in your position and provides solutions to your problems while charting a course for the future knowing that it is because of you that he occupies the exalted position.

Therefore, today I call on all men and women of goodwill and conviction in Akwa Ibom State to arise and queue behind the man who bears the mandate of destiny, a man whose time is now, a man who is a reflection of you and I, a man who is an embodiment of where we are coming from, what we have been, and what we will be come 2023.

That man is Onofiok Akpan Luke.

I am sure that in the coming days he will communicate with you all as indeed you are longing to hear from him. Such communication I am certain will also convey his blueprint and campaign thrust.

Till then, let us remain prayerful for indeed, God rules over the affairs of men and He alone knows the end from the beginning.

Amazing Grace . . .
. . . in God we trust.
